EXCURSIONS IN THE TERRITORY

Among the several suggestions that Comacchio and its territory offer to fully enjoy its culture and landscape we recommend:

VISIT TO THE MUSEUM OF THE LOAD OF THE ROMAN SHIP OR TASTING OF LOCAL PRODUCTS BY THE PICKLING FACTORY (45 min/ 1 hour)

The Roman Ship Museum is dedicated to Comacchio’s Roman ship, an important archaeological find made in 1981 at Valle Ponti a few kilometres from the lagoon city. The ship comes from the Imperial era (end of the 1st century B.C.) and was used for maritime and river trade.

Having left a Mediterranean port, it should have sailed up the Po Delta to reach the internal markets of the Po Valley, but was shipwrecked (probably due to a sea storm) and ran aground in the mouth of the river.

The ship was rapidly covered in sand which conserved its cargo, now displayed in the rooms of the museum and its hull, protected in an adjacent pavilion-laboratory.

VISIT TO POMPOSA ABBEY (1 h / 1h 30 min.)

Opening time: 8.30-19.00. Visit to the church every day. Abbey closed on Monday.

Pomposa Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the comune of Codigoro near Ferrara, Italy. The church was founded in the 6th century A.D. and from the middle of the 9th century the first community of Benedictine monks began to form, reaching its peak after the year 1000, when the Abbot’s spiritual and political jurisdiction extended over all the surrounding villages.

A true lighthouse of culture, Pomposa had one of the most extensive libraries of the time. Among the personalities that made it so famous were the saint and abbot Guido degli Strambiati and Guido da Pomposa (known by the name of Guido d’Arezzo), inventor of the modern musical notation.

EXCURSION BY MOTORBOAT (1h 45 min.)

The best way to experience the authentic nature of the Delta of the Po is through its waters. Departing from Porto Garibaldi, we will sail along the Adriatic coast up to the southern mouth of the Po Delta. We will cross the waters skimming the Natural Reserve Dune and Isle of Gorino inlet, where sandy dunes and strips of land separate the inlet from the sea and where a lot of bird species nest stop and spend the winter.

VISIT TO THE SALTWORKS OF COMACCHIO – RECOMMENDED BY BIKE (2 h – 2h 30 min.)

The saltworks extend themselves close to the Pegoraro case, to South - West of the Campo valley. They extend themselves for 600 hectares and they are articulated in thick plots of channels, mirrors of water, with sluices and plants of derivation of waters and a few cases cast off along the perimeter. The path starts from the Foce Fishing Station.

Turning left, the path leads to Valle Uccelliera, a brackish lagoon peopled by flocks of different duck species, especially in winter and during migrations. Further on, the route gets to the Salt Pan in Comacchio, where it is possible to observe a number of Sand birds; this is a nesting site for many Gulls and Terns, as well as the seat of the largest Flamingoes colony in Italy and of the country's only Spoonbills colony.
