FERRARA

Ferrara is a city and comune in Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy, capital city of the Province of Ferrara. It is situated 50 kilometres (31 miles) north-northeast of Bologna, on the Po di Volano, a branch channel of the main stream of the Po River, located 5 km (3 miles) north.

 

The Camping Village I Tre Moschettieri is located at about 60 km from Ferrara and for this reason the town is easily reachable by car or bus. The town has broad streets and numerous palaces dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, when it hosted the court of the House of Este.

 

For its beauty and cultural importance it has been qualified by UNESCO as World Heritage Site. One of the most attractive elements is its perfect state of preservation and restoration which is continually subject, from its magnificent city walls to the countless palaces that relive a glorious season, by reusing them often as cultural and studies venues by the University of Ferrara (one of the oldest and prestigious universities in Italy).

 

The town is still surrounded by more than 9 kilometres (6 miles) of ancient walls, mainly built in the 15th and 16th centuries. The most iconic building of the town is the imposing Castello Estense, while among the finest palaces Palazzo Costabili and Palazzo dei Diamanti (Diamond Palace) are worth mentioning. The latter was named after the diamond points into which the façade's stone blocks are cut.

 

Ferrara is renowned for its beauty and its lively cultural activities, and offers also a high environmental quality. The lack of traffic, the greenery, the wide pedestrian areas, its size and friendly atmosphere make Ferrara an ideal place.

 

The quiet city centre is crossed by thousands of bicycles, the queens since always. Ferrara is in the European network "Cities for cyclists", and boasts the highest two-wheeler mobility in Italy. Bicycles are available for visitors at many rentals located in strategic points of the city, moreover, many hotels include them among their services, to allow tourists to discover the city in an unusual and funny way.
